White or Silver fillings?
The pictures on the left illustrate the differences in the appearance of silver versus white fillings. This patient decided to change his silver fillings to white ones. Many people find the white fillings more natural and cosmetically appealing.
Why would someone choose white over silver fillings?
1) Both types of fillings have a long life span.
Why would someone choose white over silver fillings?
1) Both types of fillings have a long life span.
2) White fillings are bonded (glued) into the tooth. They therefore leak less than silver which is more like a plug or a cork
3) Because they are bonded in, the white fillings help hold the tooth together, they strengthen the tooth against fracture or breakage. Silver does not.
4) White fillings can be easily repaired with. Silver fillings cannot.
5) Because white fillings are bonded with adhesive, we can often make the tooth preparations (holes in the tooth) smaller than if we needed to fill the cavity hole with the silver material.
Both types of filling materials have been tested and used for long enough to know that both will more than adequately do the job of restoring a tooth to health and function. Every patient has the choice as to whichever material they want in their mouths.
At our office,we offer these choices and answer any questions you may have so you can make your own informed decision.
