Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that improves the appearance of your smile in no time. If you have yellow or brown teeth or stains across their surfaces, a teeth whitening treatment can make them brighter, shinier, and more uniform in color. Your dentist at Total Dental Care can give you an idea of what your teeth will look like after your whitening treatment is complete.

During a teeth whitening treatment at Total Dental Care, your dentist applies a bleaching gel to the surfaces of your teeth after placing a protective cover over your gums. They shine a bright light onto the gel to activate the bleach and keep it on your teeth for about 15 minutes at a time. They may repeat the process a few times for a total of 45 minutes to an hour in the dental chair. Another option is convenient custom-fit take-home trays of professional-grade bleaching gel that your dentist teaches you to use on your own time.

Are the results of teeth whitening permanent?

Teeth whitening results aren’t permanent, but there are steps you can take to keep your teeth looking bright and gorgeous for as long as possible. The team at Total Dental Care instructs you to:

  • Avoid staining substances as much as possible
  • Use a straw for dark-colored beverages
  • Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once
  • Brush right after you consume something pigmented

You can also get follow-up whitening treatments every once in a while to touch up your teeth. Depending on which bleach your dentist uses for your treatment, they may suggest touch-up treatments every six months, once a year, or every two years.

Are all stains removable with teeth whitening?

Not all teeth stains are equal. In fact, some don’t respond to whitening treatments at all. Your dentist at Total Dental Care can evaluate the shade of your teeth and any stains you’d like to target to determine if they’ll respond to whitening.

Teeth whitening treatments are specifically designed to work against enamel stains. Your tooth enamel is the hard outer shell of your teeth. It absorbs stains from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, smoke, and more. These stains are typically brown or yellow and can be greatly reduced with whitening treatments. Other stains that appear gray or purple come from the inside layers of your teeth and are better concealed with crowns or veneers.
